Chloroquine belongs to a group of medicines known as antimalarials. It works by preventing or treating malaria, a red blood cell infection transmitted by the bite of a mosquito. However, this medicine is not used to treat severe or complicated malaria and to prevent malaria in areas or regions where chloroquine is known not to work resistance. Chloroquine is the generic form of the brand-name prescription medicine Aralen, which is used to prevent and treat malaria — a mosquito-borne disease caused by a parasite — and to treat amebiasis, an infection of the intestines caused by a parasite.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend against treatment of malaria with chloroquine alone due to more effective combinations. In areas where resistance is present, other antimalarials, such as mefloquine or atovaquone, may be used instead.

Methotrexate or Plaquenil? DailyStrength I do know that plaquenil is generally considered the least invasive drug, generally prescribed as the first line of treatment. Methotrexate is the most commonly prescribed DMARD, but it does come with the chance of side-effects. I never had any side-effects of dire consequence, but many on this forum have.
