    Eye tests required for plaquenil

In Sjögren’s, Plaquenil is used to treat many symptoms of Sjögren’s including fatigue, joint symptoms of arthritis and arthralgias (joint pain), dry mouth and dry eyes. Similar to its use in systemic lupus erythematosus, many clinicians feel that it is useful in reducing general Sjögren’s “disease activity.” One of the reasons that physicians feel comfortable in prescribing Plaquenil is its low risk to benefit ratio.

Plaquenil can prove toxic to the retina, threatening the vision. Regular eye examinations are essential for those patients taking plaquenil because over time the retina can become damaged beyond repair. Regular medical monitoring is the only way to ensure that toxicity is not occurring. When should you see an ophthalmologist when taking Plaquenil? If you take Plaquenil, here is when to see an ophthalmologist Before Plaquenil treatment begins. You will have a “baseline” eye exam. This measures the health of your eyes and looks for retinal or macular disease. Once a year while taking Plaquenil. If you are taking Plaquenil to treat an inflammatory condition or malaria, you should be aware of the side effects that may occur to your eyes and vision. Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine is in a class of drugs called disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs, which are used to decrease inflammation, pain and joint damage.

As with any medication, allergic reactions including skin rashes and non-allergic reactions can occur. This means that the side effects of Plaquenil are mild and infrequent compared with its potential benefits.

Both my rheumatologist and opthamologist recommended exams every 6mo for the first year I was on plaquenil. Now I just go yearly to have my eyes checked. Also, my rhuemy said any time he makes an adjustment to my plaquenil that I'll need an eye exam within 6mo just to make sure nothing has changed. Good luck! I was told from the start by my rheumatologist I would have to have eye exams including visual field exams every six months due to the plaquenil therapy. My first two exams did include these tests. But my next six month appointment is coming up, and they told me I didn't need the visual field test this time so the appointment would be shorter. Multifocal ERG This test looks at cells in the retina called rods and cones. The test measures how well these cells respond to light. It can find retinal damage from Plaquenil.

My Take on New Ocular Screening Guidelines for Plaquenil. It has become fairly common practice for most rheumatologists to recommend that patients being treated with hydroxychloroquine be seen for formal visual field evaluation once or twice a year to monitor for retinal toxicity. The previous AAO guideline recommended screening every 12 months.
