Research into the wide-ranging effects of hydroxychloroquine has revealed many important benefits in the treatment of lupus; it must be noted that these benefits may be less effective in people who smoke Arthritis Care & Research 2010; 3–400. Benefits include Decrease in the number of disease flares. My girlfriend takes both Plaquenil and Methotrexate. Plaquenil is an anti-malarial. Anit-malarials help keep lupus symptoms in check with very few side effects, although I don't think there is a general consensus as to why. Methotrexate is like Cellcept, a general immunosuppresant although I think a little less powerful. Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine is commonly used to help keep mild lupus-related problems, such as skin and joint disease, under control. This drug is also effective at preventing lupus flares.

I really havent had much luck or help with anyone Docs telling me any good answers on what plaquenil does for anything. So far I still hurt but don't have the problems with cold or heat. I have Lupus and i seem to be in less pain when taking plaquenil than without it. I love heavy tights or support hose for extra warmth on ankles and legs. I also have lupus but my rhumetologist put me on hydroxyquine (200mg) twice a day.
