Allergy to plaquenil after being on it for years

I have been getting these horrible rashes and they are not related to sun exposure. I am starting to wonder if they are related to Plaquenil.

It seems that after being on a medication for years that has worked seems to loss it's affect or you may develop an allergy to that medication. I had to switch to Cybalta to treat my depression and admit that I was suffering from Fibromyalgia and that Cybalta would would help. I have a sulfa allergy, and have taken Plaquenil for 4 years without any adverse effects. I can say, however, that I have not had any cross allergic reaction to other drugs sometimes associated with sulfa allergies. Submitted 2 years ago * by vadegarys. So after three weeks of taking Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine I developed a rash and had to stop. Now I'm really worried since Plaquenil is supposed to be the 'life insurance' drug of lupus, people have less flares on it, live longer, etc.

I've always been one to go for the natural route and am starting to feel like I should just stop taking everything and see what happens - so frustrating. My doctor now wants me to start on Chloroquine instead of plaquenil.

  4. For all of you out there. It is possible to develop an allergy to a drug you have been on for a long time. It is more common than you think. To have an allergy you must have been exposed to the allergen or an allergen that is chemically very close to it. For example Plaquenil Your body then makes a chemical that causes the allergic reaction.

I recently decided to stop taking Plaquenil because I was having constant chest pains even more so than I usually have due to Lupus. Since I have not taken it my chest feels so much better which is odd because chest pain is not listed as a side effect. Also I noticed that the Plaquenil I think was making me feel different but not in a good way. Aug 14, 2017 According to Drugs.com, Plaquenil given for a long term can cause retinal disorders after a few months or years of daily use--especially if the dose exceeds 400mg per day.
